QUICK STEPS
1.- Log in: Sign in to your account. If you don't have one, register first. You can use your email address, or Google or Microsoft accounts.
3.- Create a new secret key: Click the "Create new secret key" button.
4.- Assign a name (optional): In the pop-up window, you can name your key for easy identification. Then, click "Create secret key."
5.- Copy and save the key: A new secret key will be displayed. Copy this key immediately and save it in a safe place, as you will not be able to see it again once you close the window.
PROCEDURE
To begin, go to the official OpenAI platform website (platform.openai.com). If you haven't already, create an account by following the simple steps on the website. Then, you can enter the email address and password linked to your OpenAI account to log in, or log in with an existing Google or Microsoft account.
Once you've created an account or logged in with an existing account, you'll see your name and profile icon in the top left corner of the OpenAI platform homepage.
To obtain an API key, click on the ‘Dashboard’ section in the upper right corner to bring up a drop-down menu. Then, click on the “API Keys” option.
In this section you have an option to "Create a new secret key" at the top right.
A pop-up window will appear. Enter a descriptive name like "Oct8ne" to identify its use. Be sure to save the API key as soon as possible.
Now copy the key and save it for future use. Once you close the window displaying it, you won't be able to reopen it. This key is used for the oct8ne bot module called GPT.
IS AN OPENAI API KEY FREE?
You can create an OpenAI API key for free. New free trial users receive $5 in credit. However, this credit expires after three months. Once the credit is used up or expired, you can enter your billing information to continue using the API. Note that if you don't enter any billing information, you will still have access, but you won't be able to make any further API requests.
OpenAI applies organization-level
limits; if you use their enterprise tools, you'll pay based on several factors. Rate caps are measured in two ways:
RPM (requests per minute) and
TPM (tokens per minute). If you're looking for specific costs based on the AI model you want to use (for example, GPT-4o or gpt-3.5-turbo, as used in ChatGPT), see OpenAI's AI model pricing page. In many cases, the API could be much cheaper than a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription, though this depends on your usage. OpenAI's pricing caps page.
